Spring and Summer Adventures Await

With spring here and summer right around the corner, the snow is melting, and temperatures are rising in Glacier National Park. The sun beckons visitors to the many campsites scattered throughout the park, and wildflowers begin to bloom along hiking trails and throughout stunning alpine valleys.

Walk along the Hemlock Grove Boardwalk, which is a short, wheelchair-accessible walkway that passes through dense forest of cedar and hemlock trees, some of which are up to 500 years old. Those looking for more of a workout can check out the Illecillewaet Glacier Trail, which features a 320-metre elevation change over 8.4 km (5.2 mi) and offers expansive views of the Illecillewaet Glacier, or the challenging Avalanche Crest Trail which features 795 metres in elevation change over 10.2 km (6.3 mi) and offers some of the most expansive and scenic views in the park. It is recommended to hike these trails in groups of at least four due to bears in the area.

With over 20 different day hikes complimented by several long overnight treks, river fishing opportunities and stunning alpine lakes, Glacier National Park has endless spring and summer adventure opportunities. Plan out your next adventure with the Glacier National Park BC Park & Destination Map, which is printed on either regular water-resistant paper or durable waterproof and tear-resistant material and can fit easily in your backpack, pocket, dry bag, or purse.

Spend the Night Under the Stars

From vehicle and RV accessible camping with comfortable amenities to backcountry camping high in the alpine or one of four different Alpine Club of Canada huts, the camping opportunities in Glacier National Park are endless. 95 frontcountry campsites are spread out over three different campgrounds, which all open in June. Illecillewaet Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, while Loop Brook has reservable sites from late July to mid-September. Due to a pine beetle outbreak creating hazardous trees, Mount Sir Donald campground is temporarily closed.

Backcountry campsites are scattered throughout the park, including at Copperstain Pass, Caribou Pass, and along the Bald Hills Trail. Please note that these campsites require a reservation and wilderness camping permit. The Alpine Club of Canada huts include the A.O. Wheeler Hut, Asulkan Hut, Glacier Circle Cabin, and Sapphire Col Hut, all of which are clearly marked and labelled on the Glacier National Park BC Park & Destination Map. Reservations for these huts can be made on the Alpine Club of Canada website.
