Berg Lake and the Berg Lake Trail
The Berg Lake Trail is one of the most popular backpacking treks in British Columbia, owing to the trail’s unmatched scenery, great backcountry camping opportunities, and generally moderate difficulty, featuring an elevation gain of 800 metres (2,600 ft) over a one-way distance of 21 km (13 mi). The Berg Lake – Mount Robson Provincial Park Adventure Map features the entire Berg Lake Trail and beyond, including the park Visitor Centre and a portion of Highway 16 which passes through the park, Overlander Falls, Emperor Falls, Kinney Lake, Mount Robson, and several neighbouring mountain peaks. Backcountry and frontcountry campsites, trailheads, viewpoints, and points of interest are clearly defined on the map, which features industry-leading cartographic detail and topographic relief shading.
IMPORTANT: In 2021, the Berg Lake Trail and surrounding area experienced a significant flood event that had substantial impacts on the trail, which was completely destroyed in sections. Since then, the entire length of the trail has been closed for assessments, planning, and rebuilding. Fortunately, the 7 km (4.3 mi) section of trail to Kinney Lake Campground has reopened as of June 27, 2023. Kinney Lake to Whitehorn Campground is planned to open in 2024, while the entire trail to Berg Lake will be opening in 2025.
Kinney Lake is a beautiful glacial lake surrounded by rocky peaks, located 7 km (4.3 mi) along the Berg Lake Trail on the way to Berg Lake and Mount Robson. This stunning turquoise lake features several rocky beaches and makes the perfect day trip or overnighter in Mount Robson Provincial Park. The trail to Kinney Lake and the Kinney Lake Campground opened on June 27, 2023, as the first stage of the Berg Lake Trail rebuild. Trail upgrades included replacing, moving, and fixing several bridges, adding new campsites, a new toilet, and several new benches to the 18-site Kinney Lake Campground, and upgrading and expanding the parking lot. Reservations for the Kinney Lake Campground can be made at camping.bcparks.ca.
Explore Mount Robson by Car
While the Berg Lake – Mount Robson Provincial Park Adventure Map focuses primarily on the Berg Lake area and Berg Lake Trail, a portion of the Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16) that runs through the park is featured as well. Easily one of the most scenic drives in British Columbia, the portion of the Yellowhead Highway that drives through Mount Robson Provincial Park features stunning views of towering mountains, including Mount Robson, sparkling glaciers, dense forest, and plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities including moose, elk, wolf, deer, black bear, and even grizzly bear.
Clearly marked on the Berg Lake – Mount Robson Provincial Park Adventure Map are campgrounds, day-use sites, trailheads, viewpoints, and points of interest such as waterfalls. Day-trippers to the park will want to check out the easy, 500 metre one-way trail that leads to Overlander Falls, a beautiful 10 metre (33 ft) tall and 30 metre (98 ft) wide waterfall that is tucked into a scenic mountain valley.
