The Backroad Digital Maps are designed to help you plan your outdoor adventure from the convenience of your home computer, laptop or iPhone/iPad. Since they are geo-referenced, they can be used in the field or mobile with the various GPS software's or in an iPhone app. Both options allow you to track your backroad travels in real-time. At home you can view the maps on the computer using the PDF files or add them to Google Earth to see the world in a whole new perspective. Indeed the options available with the digital maps are endless.
Digital File Alternatives
The Digital Edition DVD's provide all geo-referenced file formats and extras like the Backroad Mapbook written reference sections, index and map key. They also provide a manual to help you use the product. However, if you prefer only a select area or map you can buy that too. Each map matches the appropriate map key of the region or province you are in. The various file extensions are described below:
TOPO PDF (Geo-referenced PDF)
For use on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch this version of the maps can be loaded into Avenza's PDF Maps or similar App on smart phones. Once loaded you can track your location, zoom in and out of the maps and even mark your own waypoint. Most Apps also allow you to toggle between Google Maps and our maps to view the satellite or terrain imagery. Note these TOPO PDF maps are not printable.
For use in Memory Map or Fugawi, you get all of the benefits of a GPS (tracking, route planning, etc.) with the added features of our unique topographic maps. You can easily zoom in and out of maps, navigate between maps and transfer routes and waypoints to your GPS. Both Memory Map and Fugawi have iPhone versions of their software so our maps can work in these applications too.
For use in Google Earth, this is perhaps the most popular file extension of the bunch. When overlaid in Google Earth our maps add a whole new dimension to the satellite and terrain imagery by helping identify features. View the maps in 3D, fly through remote valleys, plan your route of travel and so much more. The KMZ version can also be loaded into GPS units that support KMZ files.
For use in OziExplorer and MacGPS Pro, you get all of the benefits of a GPS (tracking, route planning, etc.) with the added features of our mapbook. You can easily zoom in and out of maps, navigate between maps and transfer routes and waypoints to your GPS. OziExplorer has the added benefit of seamless maps to allow for easier navigation between maps.
Our various Backroad Digital Edition DVDs provides the whole region or province with all of the above digital formats. The maps can also be bought individually through the TOPO Map page on our Online Store. Each file extension is sold separately allowing for a low cost digital map.
If you are looking for a digital version of our mapbook to simply view on the computer, tablet or other PDF reader, our PDF book version of the Backroad Mapbooks and Fishing Mapbooks is also available. The PDF book version is not geo-referenced like the above map files but still allows easy navigation between pages, zooming into maps and a whole lot more.
It is also important to note that the Digital Edition Maps are not for use directly on a GPS unit. Please see our Backroad GPS Maps at www.gpsmaps.ca for maps designed to work specifically with Garmin GPS devices.
